The rules this table deals

Rules decide the house edge, so hiding them is how a bad version of this game gets away with being bad. Here is exactly what is dealt:

  • Eight decks, reshuffled after every hand
  • Dealer stands on all 17s, including soft 17
  • Blackjack pays 3 to 2, insurance would pay 2 to 1
  • Double on any first two cards, including after a split
  • Split up to four hands; split aces get one card each
  • No surrender

Played correctly, that set of rules gives up about 0.5% to the house, which is close to the best bet in any casino. Play on instinct instead and it climbs past 2%. Leave the hints on until the right move is obvious.

Some kind of pair lands about 7.47% of the time, and the bet returns 95.9%, so the house keeps 4.1%.

So should you take the side bets?

On the numbers, no. The main game gives up about 0.5% when you play it properly. The side bets give up 3.7% and 4.1%, which is seven to eight times worse, and no amount of timing or pattern watching changes that because every hand is dealt from a freshly shuffled shoe. They exist because a 100 to 1 hit feels good. Take them if that is what you are paying for, and put the chips you were going to lose on them somewhere you actually enjoy.

Is this blackjack simulator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup and no money. The chips are pretend, so you can practise a strategy for as long as you like without risking anything.

When should you double down in blackjack?

Double on 11 against anything, on 10 against a dealer 9 or lower, and on 9 against a dealer 3 through 6. With a soft hand, double A,7 against 3 through 6, A,6 against 3 through 6, and A,4 or A,5 against 5 and 6. Doubling is the only time you can get more money onto a hand you are favoured to win, which is why giving it up costs more than most people think. The chart above marks every one of them.

When should you split in blackjack?

Always split aces and eights, never split tens or fives. Split nines against everything except a 7, 10 or ace. Split sevens, threes and twos against a dealer 7 or lower, sixes against 2 through 6, and fours only against a 5 or 6. Splitting aces is strong because two hands starting with an ace beat one hand starting with a soft 12; splitting eights is defensive, because 16 is the worst hand at the table and two hands of 8 are not.

What is insurance in blackjack and should you take it?

Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace: you stake half your bet that the hole card is a ten, and it pays 2 to 1. It is not offered on this table, because at eight decks only about 30.8% of the remaining cards are tens, so a bet paying 2 to 1 on a roughly 4 in 13 shot gives up around 7% to the house. That is worse than every other bet on the felt, including the side bets we do offer. Taking even money on your own blackjack is the same bet wearing a friendlier name.

What is an ace worth in blackjack?

Eleven, unless that would bust you, in which case it counts as one. A hand holding an ace still counted as eleven is called soft, and it cannot bust on the next card, which is why soft hands are played more aggressively. A,7 is a soft 18 that you should still hit against a dealer 9, 10 or ace.

How do you deal blackjack?

Each player gets two cards face up. The dealer takes one face up and one face down, which is the hole card. Players act first, left to right, choosing to hit, stand, double or split until they stand or bust. The dealer then turns over the hole card and draws to 16, standing on all 17s here. Hands are paid left to right: a natural blackjack pays 3 to 2, any other win pays even money, and a tie pushes. You can watch the whole sequence above, one card at a time.

What rules does it use?

What is the house edge in blackjack?

With these rules and correct basic strategy it is roughly 0.5%, which is one of the best in any casino. Play by hunch instead and it climbs past 2%, so the strategy is worth far more than any betting system.

Are the 21+3 and Perfect Pairs side bets worth it?

Not if you care about the maths. Enumerated over an eight deck shoe, 21+3 keeps 3.70% and Perfect Pairs keeps 4.10%. Both are seven to eight times worse than the main game. They are there for the swings, not the value.

What are the odds of a perfect pair?

About 1 in 59 hands on eight decks. A coloured pair is roughly 1 in 52 and a mixed pair 1 in 26, so some kind of pair shows up about 7.5% of the time.

Can card counting work here?
