How to count cards in blackjack
Counting is not memorising every card. It is one simple tally. Small cards leaving the shoe are good for you, big cards leaving are bad, so you track the balance:

When the running count climbs, the cards still to come are rich in tens and aces: more blackjacks, more dealer busts, better doubles. That is when counters bet bigger. When it drops, they bet the minimum or sit out. The play of each hand still follows basic strategy either way.
The practice ladder
First run the trainer on slow with the value labels on, until the plus and minus tags feel automatic. Then labels off on medium, and keep the count checks perfect. Then fast: counting a full deck without a mistake in under a minute is the classic benchmark. After that, the last step is holding the count while playing real hands, which is where the blackjack trainer and the simulator come in.
The honest part: where counting does not work

A reshuffled shoe has no memory, so the count resets to zero before it can tell you anything. Counting is a real edge only in live games that deal deep into a shoe. How do you count cards in blackjack?
Give every card a value as it appears: 2 through 6 count plus one, 7 through 9 count nothing, and tens, faces and aces count minus one. Add them up as the cards come out; that total is the running count. A high positive count means the shoe is rich in tens and aces, which favours the player, so counters bet more. That is the whole trick, and the hard part is only doing it fast and accurately at table speed, which is what this trainer drills.
What is the Hi-Lo system?
The most used counting system, and the one this trainer teaches. It is a balanced count: a full deck sums to exactly zero, which is why counting down one deck is the classic practice drill. Hi-Lo gives up a little precision against fancier systems, but it is far easier to run without mistakes, and an accurate simple count beats a sloppy clever one.
What is the difference between the running count and the true count?
The running count is the raw total. In a multi-deck shoe you divide it by the number of decks still to be dealt to get the true count, which is what betting decisions use. A running count of plus six means much more with one deck left than with five. Learn to hold a perfect running count first; the division is the easy part.
Does card counting work at online casinos?
Almost never, and we would rather tell you straight. Standard online blackjack and every crypto casino table we track reshuffles the shoe after each hand, which resets the count to zero before it can mean anything. Some live dealer tables deal deeper into a real shoe, but penetration is usually shallow and limits are watched. Learn counting because it is a real skill for real cardroom tables, not as a plan for beating a reshuffled RNG.
Is card counting illegal?
No. Counting cards in your head is just playing the game well, and no law anywhere forbids thinking. What casinos can do is refuse your action: land casinos may ask a suspected counter to leave or bar them from blackjack. Devices that count for you are a different matter and are illegal in many places.
How long does it take to learn card counting?
Counting down a deck without mistakes inside 60 seconds is the usual first milestone, and most people get there within a week or two of short daily drills. Keeping the count while also playing perfect basic strategy is the real skill, so make sure basic strategy is automatic first; our blackjack trainer handles that half.
Do I need to memorise anything first?
Basic strategy, ideally to 98% or better. The count only tells you when to bet more and when to walk; it does not replace knowing the right play for every hand. Train the plays first, then add the count on top.
